difference between granite and marble

Granite and marble are different types of natural stone, each with their unique properties and characteristics. The differences between granite and marble are these:

  • Composition: Granite is composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica, while marble is made up of calcium carbonate.
  • Color: Granite can come in a range of colors from white to black, as well as various hues and patterns. Marble is typically white, but can also come in different colors and patterns. Colored marble is rare.
  • Texture: Granite is dense and has a rough surface texture, often with grainy patterns. Marble is has a smoother surface texture, and tends to be veiny.
  • Durability: Granite is more resistant to scratches, chips, and acids compared to marble. Marble can be easily scratched or etched by acidic substances.
  • Hardness. Granite is a very hard stone, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. Marble is relatively soft, it has a Mohs hardness of 3-4.
  • Cost: Granite is typically less expensive than marble because marble is a rarer and more difficult-to-extract natural stone.

Granite is an excellent choice for stairsfloors, office walls, as it is a durable and hard-wearing natural stone. It can withstand heavy foot traffic and use. Regular maintenance such as sweeping and occasional resealing will help keep your granite floors looking their best for years to come. Granite is also more practical in the kitchen. Granite countertops are more resistant to stains than marble ones.

Marble is a great material for more delicate interior elements, such as fireplace surrounds, tables, decorative walls and windowsills. It provides an elegant and refined look, but requires more care and attention than granite.
